Colour Splash

One technique I experimented with as part of my photography project was desaturating images and only selecting small areas to be in colour. This technique was what I used as my final response to my brief as I thought it had worked very well for me and definitely added to my images.

With the image on the left I opted to have the majority of it in colour as I thought it would make the windows stand out more. I wanted this to happen as at this stage of my photography project I was focusing on the formation of things like windows, signs and doors. Obviously this building was not naturally purple, I achieved this effect by adjusting the hue of the image to end up with this effect and I was able to create different versions of the image using different colour hues.

The 'Cafe Rouge' image was very time consuming to produce as I had to use the magnetic lasso tool to go around the outline of each letter to select it. This would mean that only this area would stay in colour. However, to desaturate the rest of the image I had to select the inverse area which selected the area outside of the lettering. I then desaturated this and slightly adjusted the brightness and contrast levels to make the areas of light and dark more pronounced.

This was one of the first images I experimented with. Instead of using the magnetic lasso I used the polygon lasso tool as the shape I was selecting had straight edges. As with the image at the top I was able to adjust the hue so the door became different colours. However this image shows the original colour of the door which was a bright blue. I think the effect on this image is very subtle but I am pleased with how it looks.
